Police Now - A Decade of Transformation

“THERE’S A SPACE FOR YOUNG BROWN

WOMEN IN POLICING – AND WE HAVE

SO MUCH TO BRING”

Detective Constable Tary Kufa

Greater Manchester Police

Tary changed careers to change lives. Driven by a strong sense of purpose and the desire

to be the kind of role model she wished she had seen growing up, she transitioned from

her career as a social worker to policing.

Since joining, she’s gone from strength to strength. She’s delivered justice for families

across the North West and also served on Police Now’s Board of Trustees – using her

experience to help shape the organisation.

Tary’s background in safeguarding still shapes everything she does. She maintains her

social work accreditations alongside her policing role, and as a detective. She brings

care, perspective and tenacity to every case. She sees policing as another way to support

vulnerable people.

She joined Police Now’s very first detective cohort, drawn by its call for purpose-driven

people who want to make a difference, even if they’ve never seen themselves in uniform.

“Most Police Now officers don’t come from policing families. A lot didn’t grow up trusting

the police – but they are a good reflection of the communities we serve. We came to

change things – Police Now helped us believe it’s possible.”

At the Police Now residential training academy, Tary saw that her feedback led to real

change. Later, as a trustee, she sat alongside senior leaders who truly listened to her voice

– and that gave her the confidence to speak up everywhere.

“Being listened to like that made me more likely to speak up in other places too.

I’ve never looked back.”

“Police Now aren’t just saying that they want us to make changes on our own,

they support us and help us see how we really can change things.”
